Naginata

Summary

The naginata is a pole weapon originating in Japan and originally used by the samurai class. Essentially this weapon is a long wooden pole with a long 30 - 60cm curved blade at one end. In total the naginata is well over 2 meters. It was used effectively by both foot soldiers and mounted soldiers to stab, hook or batter an opponent, and to create space on the battlefield.

HISTORY

The Edo period lasted from 1600 to 1808. During this time, women were the primary wielders of the naginata for purposes of self-protection. Naginata, in its very right, originated as a weapon. Its blade was used to fulfill the task with wide and circular movements.

PRESENT DAY

The naginata is still popular among Japanese women and is used in many athletic programs across Japan even today. It requires strong wrists and forearms to operate the weapon. Women to this day use it against men armed with bokken (wooden swords).
