Vicky Church is an English Muay Thai fighter from Touchgloves Gym in Cornwall. She started out in martial arts with Taekwondo, achieved a 2nd Dan Black Belt and won a myriad of medals and awards. She fights Lauren 'The Hatchet' Huxley on March 23rd for a British Title in what has all the hallmarks of an epic fight.

Hi Vicky, thank you for speaking with us! We know that you've had rather a tough time over the last few months, which means there will be some tricky questions coming up. So let's start with an easy one!

You're fighting Lauren Huxley, in what is a highly anticipated match up. What do you know about your opponent?

Vicky Church

“I've watched a few of her fights, I know she's had great success in her career so far and that she's pretty tough, the Welsh always are - they're from the same breed as the Cornish - Celtic and crazy.”

Rew Mitchell

It's no secret that you have incredible cardio, you are in fact one of the fittest female fighters out there. Can you tell us how you prepare for a fight? Or put another way, what is your training regime like in the run up to fighting Lauren?

Vicky Church

“Thanks for the compliment but I wouldn't go that far 🙂 On the run up to any fight I take my fitness very seriously as do most fighters I think. Technique is all well and good but if you're too tired to deliver what's the point. I train somewhere in the region of 20 hours a week with a solid mix of running, sprints, HIIT, sparring, pad work, set drills and strength training. That's about as much detail as I'm willing to give you cheeky 😉 !”

We asked this same question of Lauren, does knowing how anticipated this fight is make a difference to your mental approach? Does it help or hinder you?

Vicky Church

“Every fight is anticipated by people, it's just how many that differs. I think on the run up to every fight a fighter experiences a whole host of different emotions from excitement to doubt, and I like most people experience all of these at different periods on the run up to a fight. The thing that makes the difference is being able to stay calm and adapt accordingly on the day to any surprises.”

Without giving away your game plan, can we get a prediction for the fight?

Vicky Church

“May the best man win!”

You were matched against Lauren back in November but the fight was cancelled due to an unfortunate injury you sustained from your fight against Denise Kielholtz. Are you able to tell us what the injury was, and how it happened?

Vicky Church

“Yes I sustained quite a serious injury during the Enfusion Reality final, Denise is a national Judo Champ and Enfusion rules allow hip throw which became her fall back plan when I got her in the clinch. During one of the throws she landed on me and my collar bones partially dislocated from my sternum, I didn't notice at the time and just carried on fighting as I always do. After the adrenaline dump I soon realised I'd done something quite serious so fighting in November just wasn't an option - sleeping was bad enough!”

Rew Mitchell

As well as your great fitness level (previous injury aside), are we right in saying that you took each of your last three fights on a weeks' notice?

Vicky Church

“Yes, I was offered Enfusion Reality just after I got back from a 2 week holiday and I think I had about 10 days to prepare before I flew out and my last fight was for Enfusion Live in Holland for the 64kg World Title which I also took at 1 weeks’ notice.”

“I've actually only ever had 2 fights out of the 10 that I've had more than 1 weeks’ notice for. Living in Cornwall you really need to take what you can to get noticed.”

And your last fight was a World Title fight against Rachida Bouhout, again a fight you took on short notice. Is it fair to say that you took quite a battering? The commentators remarked at how impressive your heart was in such a difficult fight. What did you learn from that fight?

Vicky Church

“Yes my sanity has been questioned at many intervals in my fight career hehe! I did indeed take an un-necessary battering, Rachida was incredibly strong like most Dutch fighters but I wasn't at all prepared and she had done her homework. Her corner had my number, unfortunately I didn't have hers! It wasn't until the 5th round that I finally listened to my corner and found a way in, but by that time it was too late. Gutted because I nearly stopped her with a knee 🙁 Great fight, loads of experienced gained but I won't be sharing that either - Cheeky!”

Rew Mitchell

Thanks for putting up with these questions! Moving on to a more pleasant topic now, what do you do when you're not fighting?

Vicky Church

“Holiday a lot! Take my dog for walkies and hang out with my neglected family and friends. I also run my own fitness centre in Hayle called VFit, this takes up a lot of my time!”

Rew Mitchell

You fight out of Touchgloves in Cornwall alongside Lucy Payne, both under Nathan Kitchen. With two high level British female fighters gearing up for a home show - What's the atmosphere like there at the moment?

Vicky Church

“The atmosphere is insane, we have the best team at the mo, so many newbies, oldies returning to the fight scene and many aspiring champs, and we all work closely together as a unit and don't let anyone slack. It's awesome :)”

Before we close, are there any thank you's or shout outs you would like to do?

Vicky Church

“Always... Thanks to Nath for driving my career forward and always believing in me, thanks to Kath Billing for everything #legend, thx to my estranged friends and family who I promise I'll spend loooooads of time with after the fight and thanks to the TG Family, I couldn't do it without you all.”

Rew Mitchell

Thank you so much for speaking with us, we wish you all the best for your next fight. This is a fight we wouldn’t miss for the world - it's going to be epic!
