Summary
Shaolin Kung Fu is the journey to enlightenment. It is a way of life that creates the ultimate human. Using the strength, spirit, and thought, it created warriors. Warriors, with total control over mind and body.
This style is considered more than a discipline and is believed to be the oldest form of Kung Fu.
History / Origins
ETYMOLOGY
Shaolin is an ancient martial art that was discovered in China.
- Shào refers to Shaoshi Mountain which is part of the seven mountains in the Songshan range, and
- lín means Forest. Translated today it can also mean ‘little forest’.
BEGINNINGS
It is said that a man, Boddhidharma came from India to a monastery in China in 464 AD. He discovered the Buddhist monks who resided there were weak from meditation, and so devised a strength and conditioning sequence. From these sequences, they cultivated immense internal and external energies; or Shaolin Kung Fu.
PRESENT DAY
The Abbot Shi Yongxin made it his mission to restore the Shaolin temple to save these traditions and make Shaolin accessible to the world. It is now portrayed in movies and stage shows. From the Shaolin Temple itself, come tales that are told from the trees with holes born from finger conditioning, and indented concrete floors from stance training.
