Following Cristiane Justino’s impressive win at Lion Fight Promotions 11 Invicta FC President, Shannon Knapp talked about the lady known as “Cyborg”, combat sports crossover fights, and the growth of Muay Thai in America. “This (LFP 11) was more about Cris than any benefits for Invicta FC,”
We were fortunate enough to be ringside for this epic occasion on 26th July 2013 at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The event of course was Lion Fight 10, featuring five amateur and six professional bouts. There were two female fights on the card, an amateur bout at 110lbs between Miranda Cayabyab (Milpitas, California) and Angela Hill (New York, USA)
Our 6th Awakening Spotlight brings you a fighter that certainly lives up to her name. Tecia ‘Tiny Tornado’ Torres is a fiery strawweight, competing in MMA, Kickboxing and Muay Thai. This humble athlete fights out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and almost certainly doesn’t realize how inspirational she is.
We want to apologize for what must appear as an overall lack of activity on our website over the last three months. There is however a very good reason, behind the scenes we are building a highly improved website. When we initially launched the first website (what we are now lovingly calling Awakening Website 1.0) we took an interest in watching how our supporters used the website.
A couple of weeks ago one of our amazing photographers, Kelly Smith reported to me by phone from Soft Play with her children… “Hey, you might want to come down here for a coffee… I’m sat with Sheree Halliday”
We recently travelled to Swansea, Wales to do a fun photo shoot with the young 16 year old up-and-coming Muay Thai fighter Lauren ‘The Hatchet’ Huxley. An exciting fighter that we lovingly named ‘The Hatchet’ (see earlier article), Lauren and her family happily took the name and ran with it.
We had worked with both Grace Anderson and Vicky Church before so we were extremely excited for this one. It was to be a last minute K1 fight at CSFC Challengers 2, in which Vicky standing in and not at her usual fully trained level. Having an in-depth knowledge of each fighter’s style, and indeed being friends with both really spices things up.
At long last we got to go and watch Iman “Pretty Killer” Barlow fight. The fight was in her home town of Melton Mowbray, UK at an event hosted her fathers Assassins Gym. There were approximately twelve fights on the card but we were sucked right into the main event and it’s build up.
19 May 2013. We travelled to Barry, Wales to a fight night hosted by Eagles Gym. The reason for travelling was to watch the Lauren “The Hatchet” Huxley fight. Her opponent, Natasha Cunvin was unknown to us at the time, but we’d seen Lauren fight before and were so impressed that we wanted to see her fight again. Lauren is a youngster, but shows a lot of promise and focus…
Awakening is mobilizing an army from the female fight scene in a global campaign against breast cancer! This campaign is called “Female Fighters Unite.” Read on to find out how you can easily get involved in this collaborative effort! The Female Fighters Unite initiative is the effort of both Awakening and MZ & Emmers Sports Bra Auction.
6th April 2013. Grace Anderson faced Claire Walkey in Guildford, UK at CSMMA’s Ultimate Conflict 4 in a last minute K1 bout. Grace’s greatest assets are her power and dedication, whereas Claire has a youthful fearlessness about her and Touchgloves Gym showing her the way.
The two inaugural Awakening World Muay Thai Titles took place this past Sunday at Fast & Furious 2 in Penzance, Cornwall, UK. The event marked an emotional and historical notch in the Awakening timeline. Not only were there the two first ever Awakening titles up for grabs, it was actually our first co-sanctioned event.
Our 5th Awakening Spotlight is a very special one indeed. We’d like to introduce you to Emma Bayer of MZ & Emmers Sports Bra Auction for Breast Cancer. This is a unique spotlight because she’s NOT a martial artist, but yet has an incredibly inspiring story that Awakening has now become involved in. Did we mention that this little American girl is just six years old!
Last night saw a pivotal moment in WMMA, as global eyes watched UFC 157 with bated breath to see how Dana White would showcase the organisations first ever women’s bout. Ronda Rousey vs Liz Carmouche was placed as the main event, and was for the Women’s Bantamweight World Champion title. In the co-main event spot was Lyota Machida vs Dan Henderson.
We want to thank Sylvia Schiavoni, a Muay Thai Champion from Melbourne, Australia. She recently took the time and effort to write a great little article about Awakening in International Kickboxer magazine. We’ve posted the article below in case you are interested in reading it.
It wouldn’t be unusual for you to say you haven’t yet heard the name Lauren Huxley. She is a young up and coming Muay Thai fighter from Swansea, Wales. This sixteen year old models herself on the great Julie Kitchen, the Queen of Muay Thai. We had seen her fight a few times before at small shows and had been impressed at her raw talent.
Our 4th Awakening Spotlight brings you Sylvie von Duuglas-Ittu. We’re really pleased to introduce you to this wonderful lady as she has recently agreed to write the occasional article for the website. Sylvie’s discipline is Muay Thai and she’s one of the queens of social media in our eyes, which is one of the reasons we approached her.
As February 1st sees in a new month for the Awakening website, our first month is completed. Due to the response we’ve had, we thought it was only right that we share with you our progress and experiences. The ultimate goal of Awakening is to help raise the global social acceptance of female martial artists, and give the athletes an online home where they feel acknowledged for their hard work.
We thought we needed to highlight a mini issue that a tiny percentage of you will have come across in the Global Female Martial Artists Register. There are a handful of broken links due to our own error of inputting them incorrectly. Fortunately each time someone clicks on a broken link it is flagged to us immediately. As soon as we see the flag we correct the link.
Our 3rd Awakening Spotlight brings you Britain’s Julie Kitchen. Where do we start with this one? In the world of Muay Thai, Julie is as revered as a fighter can become. We consider her one of the most inspirational female martial artists of all time. She recently hung up her Muay Thai gloves after dominating the hearts and minds of fans for eleven years.
Our second Awakening Spotlight brings you Jasminka Cive, to date an unbeaten MMA fighter with a rich Muay Thai history and record of 17-6-1. She was born in Belgrade, Serbia and as a young girl she would play fight and wrestle with her elder sister, who was bigger, stronger and four years older. Not surprisingly her sister would always win.
Our first Spotlight brings you British girl Lauren, a 2nd Dan Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. Picked for two reasons: she is an outstanding athlete, and we felt that she needed cheering up somewhat. Back in mid August she had a painful injury that put her out of training for a few months. She tore ligaments in her ankle which forced her to cancel almost everything in her calendar.
